Robert Redford stars as The Great Waldo Pepper, a young pilot back from World War I, barnstorming his way across the Midwest. Taking on rival after rival, Waldo meets his match in Axel (Bo Svenson), an air-show promoter. Together, with acrobatic Mary Beth (Susan Saradon), they take air showmanship to great heights.
